Earth, earthlings,earthernware ...etc etc etc

Yippee!!!! Here I am hitting the second run in my blog. Trust me, its tough for me to stick on to something like this :-)
things running at the back of my mind at this point:
1) packing for the trip to Austin & San Antonio tomorrow - its thanksgiving weekend...how much I love the holidays !!!
2)making dinner - mom...i miss you!!
3)yeah .. the INFAMOUS pile of dishes ..SOB!!
and to motivate the self - i am pampering myself with a hot cup of elakkai (cardamom) tea.It tastes pretty good.after all i hate being falsely modest ;-) now some serious blog stuff...
Something which has been having a very profound impact on me is the movie 2012. Watched it 2 weeks ago..and the very emotional me came out crying (Hah!). To such an extent that I was hiding my red eyes from my husband walking beside me (he looked so unaffected..how ?? i keep thinking ) & i felt such a gush of brotherly & sisterly love to every single soul walking past me in the Stonebriar movie theatre...Geeez..what a movie does to you!!!
The movie is just this- the earth is bound to meet its dooms day & an Indian astrophysicist foresees this & warns the his american friend-fellow-scientist of this. The *wannabe first* americans have already made big spaceships to escape this disaster. What happens to earth & how some escape is the movie's crux.
Technically the movie is fantabulous. Great graphics, special effects, music, screenplay. I liked John Cussack (of 'Serendipity' fame) in this movie. But his stunts were unbelievable.Yes literally. He drives through caverns, split-wide-open roads & even erupting volcanoes spitting fire; but guess what? He & his car come out untarnished! He even falls into one seemingly never ending hole in the ground (oh yeah add some fire, lava & rocks into it ) and again emerges victorious. Things like these make us realise "ok this is only a movie-all this would never happen" ..Ha ha ha
There is one thing that I could decipher from the movie. Anything that has a start, will end. Speaking of the infinte Universe- the galaxies, the stars & other planets, we The Humans happened by chance.Earth had right proportion of water & land, the right mixture of atmospheric gases, the soil wasnt too poisonous for life to perish. And some primival organism had the presence of mind to take advantage of these opportunities to evolve into something more complex -algae to amphibians, dinosaurs to dictators (whoa...!!)..A sheer matter of coincidence I would say.
Lets look at it scientifically (please.. allow me to rave about some facts I learnt :-) ). The sun is a mediocre star. The scientists say so.Its not that great in size, mass or life span when compared to other stars in the Milky Way.It would collapose one day.And guess what? It is going to emit out some big cloud or say 'Nebula' of gases(come on guys..its the sun, not some piled up ball of chewing gum). So what happens when Mr.Sun dies? We will have no day, no summer, no spring,no photosynthesis, so no plants,so no animals,in a nutshell- none of the solar children! Nothing that has evolved till this second. And imagine what the nebula of gases would do? I guess serve as a launchpad for new types of cancers.Hmm...scary it is.
So it is evident that end will be there. But how soon is the million dollar question. Some say 500 billion years from now, 2012 movie says Dec 21 of 2012.
But the leading countries have already started exploring possibilities of life in other planets. These studies are only in its stages of infancy. Which is as suitable as Earth - Mars? May be. Pluto? Hah..who knows. But imagine, beginning a new life there means starting from the scratch. A new sun, a new planet of life, new physics, new chemistry, new biology.
Will we have another Adam and Eve? Will Eve eventfully eat the apple given by Satan? Will some little girl open the Pandora Box again? Starting something afresh never sounded so astounding to me.
The hindu mythology says Lord Vishnu takes an avatar at the beginning of every yug (tamil:yugam) It is Kaliyug now as many of us know. So when kaliyug ends, he is supposed to appear as the last of his avatars - the KALKI avatar.(Sigh! it is end of avatars for the Lord himself!). His avatar will put an end to all atrocities, we are told. It is also believed that at the end of kaliyug, humans will become inhuman to such an extent that we will prey upon each other! But will we ever have normal life after kaliyug- will life sustain as before? or is it really THE END? These ambiguities resonate with the uncertainities that the scientific theories give rise to.
The world will end if it has to - but only to restore humanity. We may live or perish- but the big wonderful tale of Mother Earth will have a happy ending :-)

  1. Seriously? 2012 made you think so much? I should see that movie. Heard that the destruction scenes are awesome.
    .
By the way, Pluto is not a planet in the solar system anymore. Things are much different from the way we learned it!

  2. The movie is a good watch though as I said the *heroic* stunts tickle your funny bone rather than making you sit on the edge of your seat. And almost all movies make me think of something or the other, this one made me blog which is quite an achievement :-)
Incidentally I have been hearing & watching too many things about earth's end, universe expansion & second sun etc at the same time.
